Emma Lynch

Psychotherapist/Counsellor  -  (EMDR & Somatic approaches)

Emma is a Psychotherapist with almost a decade of experience working with clients and is also accredited with the BACP, which means she meets their high standards as a competent and ethical practitioner.

Qualifications and training:

Emma initially qualified as a person-centred counsellor by completing CPCAB Level 2–4 diplomas in counselling. She then trained as an integrative psychotherapist through a range of courses, including a Level 5 Diploma in ‘Substance Misuse Theory and Interventions’ during which she achieved an additional ‘Advanced Specialist Practitioner’ diploma from the National Counselling Society, and later went on to achieve a first-class BA (Hons) in 'Counselling and Psychotherapy'.

As part of her degree, she studied trauma and body psychotherapy, which informs all of her work and provides a deep understanding of the body and nervous system. She is currently back studying Somatic Experiencing, which is a body-based therapy for trauma and stress, to further deepen and develop her practice.

Recently, Emma completed accredited EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) training (Parts 1 and 2) with Queen’s University Belfast. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process and resolve traumatic or distressing experiences that feel “stuck.” It can be effective for trauma, anxiety, and phobias by supporting the nervous system to reprocess difficult memories, so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.

Current experience:

For the last four years, Emma has worked as a Psychotherapist in a local addiction charity in Derry, alongside running her own private practice. Prior to this, she worked in a variety of settings including a large GP practice and several community centres.

Emma specialises in addiction and trauma and has experience working with a wide range of issues from day-to-day stress, depression, anxiety and grief to complex personality disorders. She notes that her experience has taught her that the presenting issue is usually a symptom of something much deeper.

How can she support you?

Through years of personal development, Emma has developed the capacity and self‑awareness to hold space for clients when they are in deep psychological pain. Through her professional training, spanning over a decade, she has developed the knowledge and tools of a range of therapeutic approaches. Emma tailors these to your personality and your unique needs and offers therapy in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming to you or your nervous system.

Emma’s philosophy is:

“You are the expert, your own hero. You have made it through everything life has thrown at you so far because of all the choices you have made (even the bad ones). I can walk with you as you undo all that is not you and find your authentic self.”
